ART AT THE WHITNEY - Opening Thursday, February 16, 2012, 5-8 pm

Raul Vega specializes in textured canvases, using a rich mixture of layered paints that are often applied with brushes in combination with a palette knife. In this latest show, he takes on the creative challenge of depicting a wide variety of countryside cameo close-up scenes from nature, which seem to be chosen from an expansive horizon that celebrates plants on the earth's surface. Here the artist's visual personality comes through with polish and gusto as his works vibrate with thickly-painted surfaces and vivid color.
